the irish elk

it is neither irish, nor an elk.

how's that for confusing?

It's not exclusively Irish. The best examples (as with everything really) can be found in Ireland. There were others found elsewhere, but if you look anywhere, you'll find some Irish. Especially in pubs and on 17th March.
So the Irish Elk was Irish, just there were a few wanderers in Europe, probably working in liverpool, or trying to get a boat to Boston to start the Irish mafia, a lá The Departed
